We’ve been blessed with another long weekend! It’s Double Ninth Festival, but did you know it’s known locally in Hong Kong as an excuse to go hiking? In the spirit of the festivities, we’ve listed our favourite five hikes to do this long weekend.
1. Ma Dai Stream
If a traditional hike is a little boring for you, then head to Ma Dai Stream at Tai Shui Hang MTR. You’ll need to do some mild rock climbing following the stream up as you go, and potentially wading through some water too… but we promise the effort is worth it! You’ll be greeted by not one or two but more than 6 cascading waterfalls and rock pools where you can cool off as you continue exploring up. You’ll also have stunning views from the top of the falls to a view of Hong Kong.
2. Peak Hike
Whether it’s day or night, if you’re lucky enough to catch a clear pollution-free day — the views overlooking both sides of the Hong Kong harbour will be a sight for sore eyes. An easy walk from Central, just follow the morning trail and head up (the steep hills will guide you). You’ll easily see the peak once you’ve arrived at the top, and don’t forget to take the Peak Circle walk which ensures a panoramic view from all angles.
3. Lion Rock
You may have heard about Hong Kong’s Lion Rock spirit, but have you actually visited Lion Rock yet? The iconic hike starts from Wong Tai Sin MTR unveiling breathtaking views around the city. The rock mountain is estimated to be around 140 million years old and gets its namesake from its Lion shape. For our lucky Weave Studios – Prince Edward residents, they can enjoy views of Lion Rock from the roof!
4. Monkey Hike
Did you know that there are monkeys living in Hong Kong? And that there’s a whole hill named after them too? Cue Monkey Hill. Located in Kam Shan Country Park, there’s a population of wild Rhesus Macaques living free. For a dose of some real life animal planet in the concrete jungle, as cute as they look, these monkeys are still very wild. Please do pay attention to the do’s and don’ts listed at the park entrance before you start.
5. Long Ke Wan
Home to one of the most beautiful beaches in Hong Kong (as told by CNN), Long Ke Wan is located in Sai Kung at the foothills of Hong Kong’s Geopark. Get there by speedboat, taxi or bus to arrive at the first stage of the trail before you start exploring. With many stunning beaches and soft white sand, you’ll be far from civilisation here where there are no vendors selling drinks or snacks to sustain your trip.
Hope this list helps you sort out your weekend plans and happy hiking!
